It was during a lunch break back in the early 1990's when Wim Ouboter, a Swiss banker found himself in the mood for a bratwurst from his favourite sausage stand. The problem was that it was a bit too far to walk but too short to take his car or even bicycle. Surely this “micro distance” standing between Wim and his favourite lunch could be conquered.

Recalling the scooters of his youth, he set about making an adult version, a primitive scooter using the wheels of some inline skates. With his characteristic mixture of a kid’s desire to be hip and a grown-up’s application of technology, Wim worked at the scooter until its look, performance and compactness passed his coolness test. From that point forward the history of the scooter has been completely rewritten.

Wim attended trade shows in 1999 with his first professionally developed and truly unique 2-wheeled scooter and 3-wheeled scooter dubbed a Kickboard® which ended up winning the Stuttgart Design Centre Design Prize that year. MICRO then went on to sell more than 9 million scooters of various designs by the end of 2000.
